1876 Elementary Education Act

(Sandon's Act)

Prevented the employment of any child under the age of 10. Children over the age of 10 could only be employed if they had proof of proficiency in the 3 Rs or of previous good attendance at school

1880 Elementary Education Act

Extended the 1870 Act for compulsory education for children aged 5-12

1870  Education Act

Introduced compulsory universal education for children aged 5-12 but left enforcement of attendance to newly created school boards

1879 Elementary Education Act (Industrial Schools Act) 

Extended the powers of school boards over industrial schools

1891 Elementary Education Act

Grants made available for all schools. No more charging for basic elementary education
