Testimonies

Mr Bennett, the Headteacher, was respected and feared

 

The top stream took their O levels a year early

 

1963 was a cold winter. Outdoor PE was cancelled all term

 

I was in the music society, biology club and the choir. I joined the biology club because they had extra outings

 

We were allowed to play in the copse at lunchtimes 

 

The school dinners were drab

I feel that Bournemouth School saved me when I moved to Bournemouth and entered a middle school where everyone else knew each other

 

Bournemouth School taught me self-motivation, ambition and discipline. It wasn't just about academic achievement

 

By the sixth form we were trusted to run things. We had a strong mutual trust with the teaching staff

One of the first jobs every boy had to do, on the first day each year, was make a cardboard timetable with a sliding cursor to accommodate 'day 6' of a six day timetable

 

There was a cane displayed in a glass case in the Head's office, but public opinion was turning against the use of corporal punishment in schools

 

The whole year got 100 lines for indulging in a no-holds-barred acorn fight

We had a "Speech Day" annually, usually at the Winter Gardens

There are lots of lunchtime and after school clubs which are all run by the teaching staff in their own time and they are mostly free

I am a member of the chess club. We play against people from all year groups as well as inter-school competitions

​

I'm looking forward to the year 9 Germany trip and the year 10 Battlefields trip as well as doing A levels later on

I've just started my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and joined the RAF branch of the CCF which I've been looking forward to since I started  Bournemouth School

I played cricket for the school and later for the Old Bournemouthians

 

My time at Bournemouth School gave me a good grounding for the future

 

It wasn't just academic, they taught us a lot about life

I had a really inspiring  physics teacher

 

We learnt respect for authority
