Stourfield New Departments & Senior School

Monday 10th October 1927 – Opening of the new department of Stourfield Council School.

Opened by the Mayor of Bournemouth (Ald. H. J. Thwaites) 

New building consisted of an assembly hall, eight classrooms, teachers’ rooms, cloakrooms, store rooms etc. 

Provided accommodation for 320 school seniors.

“The special feature in this new block is that it is so planned to serve, under any future organisation, as a Junior, Senior, or Senior Mixed department.”

“Each classroom, under the Board’s latest regulations, will accommodate 50 junior scholars or alternatively 40 senior scholars.”

1930 - Overcrowding became an issue again.

​

1st April 1934 - Temporary accommodation for the overcrowded school was provided at St. Christopher's Hall, Burleigh Road.

​

13th May 1935 – Third block Senior Mixed School was opened.

​

September 1936 – Senior pupils of Southbourne St. Katherine’s School were transferred to Stourfield Senior School. 

At this time only 30% of the pupils in Bournemouth were in re-organised senior schools.

​

1st April 1945 – Following the 1944 Education Act, Stourfield was reclassified as a County Secondary School.

Stourfield was one of six council provided schools to be renamed and reclassified.
